15 seconds of Star Wars that will make you freak out, plus the battle that brought down a Star Destroyer

who Kylo Ren is fighting

We’ve learned a fair amount over the last week or two about Kylo Ren, the red lightsaber wielder seen in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. If you don’t want to know anything about him and would rather be surprised, stop reading here.

To begin with, director J.J. Abrams revealed that Ren (palyed by Adam Driver) is not a Sith. He uses the force and wields a lightsaber, but he is technically not Sith. That probably explains why his lightsaber is not smooth, but has a ragged look – in the books and comics, it was established that Jedi and Sith build their own lightsabers as a right of passage.

Abrams went on to confirm that Ren is a member of the First Order, and he answers to “Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.” Snoke is played by Andy Serkis, who filmed his part in a full motion capture suit.

who Kylo Ren is fightingA few details on the First Order also came out, although they were very general. To begin with, the First Order is not really the remnants of the Empire, but rather an imitator that was created as a direct result of its fall.

“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?’” Abrams said in an interview with Empire Online.

“What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”

Disney and Lucasfilm released one more piece of info today by way of a 15 second Instagram teaser. It was all footage we’ve seen before – with one notable exception.

In the teaser below, we finally get to see who Kylo Ren is fighting in that forest: John Boyega’s Finn, who is wielding a Jedi-made blue lightsaber. Go ahead and place your bets on who that lightsaber originally belonged to.

This isn’t the first time Finn has been shown wielding the lightsaber in question – it’s actually on the recently released poster as well.

The clip of Ren standing in a forest and igniting his crossbarred lightsaber was one of the first of the new movie we ever saw, so it’s cool to see the other side of that.

And speaking of seeing the other side of things, the first trailer showed us a look at a Star Destroyer that appeared to have been downed years, even decades earlier. Soon you’ll be able to witness exactly how that crash happened.

While Disney was busy Instagramming, Electronic Arts released a new image from the upcoming game, Star Wars Battlefront. More specifically, it released an image from one of the battles the game will feature: The Battle of Jakku.

Battle of Jakku

The Battle of Jakku takes place shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi, which puts it 29 years before the events of The Force Awakens. The battle was one of the major post-Emperor turning points, as the New Republic handed Imperial holdouts a massive defeat.

Battle of JakkuAccording to EA, the crash of the Star Destroyer was actually the start of the battle.

Players will get a chance to experience the battle firsthand. Star Wars Battlefront will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 17. The Battle of Jakku, however, will come a little later.

The battle will be released as DLC on December 1, 2015 for those that pre-ordered the game. Everyone else will get a shot to play it a week later, which is still plenty of time to fill in some gaps prior to the release of the film.

As for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, it hits theaters on December 18, 2015.
