Tomorrowland trailer looks awesome, but we still have no idea what it’s about
As if 2015 weren’t already crowded enough with movies that filmgoers are eager to throw money at (Avengers 2, Star Wars, Jurassic World, etc., etc.), you can probably go ahead and add one more potential mega hit to that list. Disney’s upcoming Tomorrowland won’t hit theaters until May 22, 2015, but the film has a lot going for it. Even if we have no idea what the hell it’s about.
Tomorrowland stars George Clooney as Frank Welker, a former boy-genius turned disillusioned inventor. Welker crosses paths with optimistic and curious teen Casey Newton (Under the Dome and The Secret Circle’s Britt Robertson), and then, presumably, stuff happens.
According to Disney:
From Disney comes two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland, a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as Tomorrowland. What they must do there changes the world — and them — forever.
The film has been shrouded in a proverbial cloak of mystery, which was then wrapped by a very real Disney NDA. As a result, only rumors and hints of what the film is about have made it to the real world. The film was originally known by the codename “1952,” before it took the name Tomorrowland, which is – not coincidentally – the name of a futuristic theme area found at Disney’s amusement parks. Given that it was a secret Disney project and the enigmatic codename, that led to some amazingly clever and convoluted theories that the film was actually a secret Star Wars project, a claim that was repeatedly denied. But, ya know, it’s the Internet.
Director Brad Bird (Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, The Incredibles) is behind the lens, working from a script written by Bird, Jeff Jensen, and Damon Lindelof. Tomorrowland also stars Hugh Laurie, Judy Greer, and Tim McGraw. Expect to hear a bunch more about this film in the next few months leading to its May 2015 release.
