This is probably the best football kick you’ll see for a long time
There has been a lot of talk during the NFL off season regarding the new rules surrounding the extra point kick. The snap now originates from the 15 yard line rather than the two, which means the kick will now occur on the 33-yard line.
Despite the predictable outrage from the traditionalists, it’s not really that big of a deal. A 30-ish yard kick from the center of the field is pretty much a given anyway. If the NFL really wants to increase the difficulty, it should look at what Georgia Southern kicker Younhoe Koo is doing.
Georgia Southern’s football team isn’t going to show up at the University of Oregon and walk away with a win. If it kept the score to within two dozen it would probably be a moral victory, but it does have a powerful winning football tradition. The Eagles have won six 1-AA championships, 11 conference titles, and they made it to the national semifinals in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
Yeah, Division 1-AA has a real playoff, because it isn’t ridiculous.
They have a solid program. That said, this kick has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Sure, it’s incredible, and sure, Koo is maybe a bit out of his mind with that flip, but it’s not like that is going to help him kick a game winning 50-yarder – unless the NCAA decides to change things up and give extra points for crazy stuff like this ala MTV’s old Rock ‘N jock games. Then Koo may suddenly find himself heavily recruited.
Koo will make his case when Georgia Southern opens its season on September 5 at West Virginia.
