Sony taps the guys behind The Lego Movie for a new Spider-Man animated flick

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a $4 billion franchise property spider can… That sentence actually works a lot better if you know the old Spider-Man cartoon theme. If not, just move on.

Now that Sony has revitalized the Spider-Man property with the help of Marvel, it’s wasting no time in tapping the potential that many believed it was squandering. Along with the new Spider-Man movie, rumored to be titled “Spectacular Spider-Man,” Sony has announced plans for a full length, animated Spider-Man film to hit theaters in 2018.

Spider-Man is no stranger to the animated scene, but one thing that already sets this film apart is the involvement of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street). The pair will act as writers and producers, overseeing the project. They may also decide to direct, but that’s still unconfirmed.

Following the incredible success of The Lego Movie, Lord and Miller are very much in demand at the moment, and they are taking full advantage. Along with this film, they are also producing Lego Ninjago, The Lego Batman Movie, and The Lego Movie Sequel. The pair are also producing a pair of television shows: Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Last Man on Earth.

Lord and Miller are also rumored to be writing the screenplay for the big screen version of The Flash. That would put them on both sides of the Marvel/DC rivalry. That may not be an issue, or it may be that the still unconfirmed Flash deal may fall through.

There isn’t much known about the animated Spider-Man film yet, even who it will focus on. When the news was first announced that a new Spider-Man was on the way, there were a lot of voices calling for the new, ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales, to get a shot at the starring role.

There’s no reason to think the animated film will star Morales, but there’s nothing stopping it either. The animated film will not be related to the live-action film, which is due in theaters on July 28, 2017.
