The first Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 trailer and poster are here for us to obsess over
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 won’t hit theaters for just shy of seven months, but Marvel Studios is not about to slow the drumbeat of hype for its upcoming properties. Doctor Strange hits theaters November 4, but after that, there is a six-month dead zone for Marvel Studios movies. Thankfully for fans (and Disney’s accountants), Marvel has plenty more on the way.
In an effort to remind people that Marvel movies are now a semi-permanent staple of entertainment, the studio has released the first teaser trailer and poster for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. It gives us a few glimpses at what to expect, and raises a bunch of questions.
To start with, the new poster (on the right) shows that Yondu (Michael Rooker) is either part of the team, or at least more heavily featured. In the comics, Yondu was a founding member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, so seeing more of him isn’t surprising. That doesn’t necessarily mean he is on the team, but they clearly work together.
What is a little more of an eyebrow raiser is that Nebula (Karen Gillan) is part of the team – at least enough so that she is with them on the poster. In the comics, Nebula is almost always seen as a villain. The sisterly relationship with Gamora (Zoe Saldana) gives the filmmakers a lot of material to explore though.
And speaking of Gamora, there seems to be a continuation of the hinted romance between her and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). That isn’t surprising, but it is a departure from the comics. Hollywood films and TV shows can’t resist pushing a male and a female character together (or two gay characters, two lesbians, etc – really any chance to force a romance in, they will). Whether or not this carries on is an interesting question.
Other than that, the trailer doesn’t really give us a lot to go on – but it doesn’t really need to either. The original was a huge hit, the Marvel machine continues to roll, and the cast that was mostly “rising stars” in the original are now mostly bona fide stars. The odds are good that the movie will be a hit. A big, big hit. Hopefully, the next trailer will give us a glimpse of Kurt Russell as Ego, Baby Groot, Manits, and more.
It’s nice to see that Marvel isn’t resting on its laurels. There will be plenty of trailers, posters, and more in the coming months leading up to the film’s release on May 5, 2017, but for now check out the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 trailer below.
