The ‘Suicide Squad’ may have found its Harley Quinn
A new report from Collider claims that not only will Harley Quinn appear in the Suicide Squad film, the role has already been cast. If true, the position will be filled by Australian actress Margot Robbie.
Take all of this with a grain of salt, but there do seem to be an awful lot of leaks about this film. To begin with, the first rumor began shortly after the film was officially announced. The team’s lineup is still unknown, but both Tom Hardy and Will Smith are said to be at the top of Warner Bros. and DC’s want list.
The next major rumor was that the Joker would appear in the film and WB is talking to Jared Leto for the role. None of that is confirmed, but the pieces do seem to fit.
The rumor of Harley Quinn appearing in the film actually predates the Joker news, but it didn’t gain as much attention. The new report seems to confirm Quinn’s involvement, which also lends credibility to the possibility of the Joker appearing.
The character of Harley Quinn is fairly unique among DC characters, having originated on TV in Batman: The Animated Series, rather than the comics. The character of Dr. Harleen Quinzel began as a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum. When she met the Joker, he used his wit to enflame her own madness, and from there she aspired to be the love of the Joker’s life.
Quinzel donned the Harley Quinn persona and acted as a bizarre sidekick. In the comics, her relationship with the Joker was an abusive one – at least when he noticed her. She left him after one attempted murder too many, and ran into Poison Ivy, who took pity on Quinn and helped her gain enhanced strength and agility. She and the Joker continue to have a relationship that swings from tender to homicidal, but more and more Quinn has come in to her own.
Like so much else with director David Ayers’ Suicide Squad, Quinn’s role is unknown. It sounds like she will be one of the stars and a member of the Squad, which would make sense. Quinn has frequently appeared as part of the team, and was a major part of the recently released animated film, Batman: Assault on Arkham, which featured the team. She even received a shout out in the TV show Arrow when the Suicide Squad was featured.
As for the Suicide Squad, the team features a rotating lineup of super villains that are blackmailed into working for the government in order to complete missions that are considered almost hopeless. Quinn is a frequent member in the New 52 run of the comic, as are Deadshot, Deathstroke, Captain Boomerang, and a few other, lesser known DC villains. That may be the most likely line up for the film. Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is also rumored to appear in the film, although he may be a villain or something else completely.
If Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Tarzan) has been cast as Quinn, the odds are we will see her in future films in the same role. That’s if the casting rumor turns out to be true, of course.
