Schwarzenegger will return to the role of Conan in a direct sequel to the 1982 original
Once Arnold Schwarzenegger finishes work on Terminator: Genisys, his next film will apparently be the long, long in development Conan sequel, which is currently known as The Legend of Conan. And according to producer and co-writer Chris Morgan, the film will be more in the vein of John Milius’ violent action film than its PG successor.
In an interview with The Arnold Fans, Morgan confirmed that the new film is moving ahead. He also said that it will be a continuation of the story that began with 1982’s Conan the Barbarian.
“Our tone is a logical extension of the character established in the ’82 film…but 30 years later. When we meet him again, Conan has been many things over the course of his life — a thief, a warrior, a pirate, a king, a legend — and is now an older man,” Morgan said. “Think Unforgiven…with a sword-wielding barbarian.”
Morgan went on to claim that he is a fan of Milius, so much so that he stated the director was both a visionary and a hero of his. He goes on to state that the film will honor Milius’ tone.
“We’re very lucky that the architects of this new film — the writer, the producers, the studio and most of all, Arnold — who is Conan — are all first-generation fans who either worked on the film or who came along for the ride, cheering from their theater seats opening night,” Morgan said.
When Conan the Barbarian debuted in 1982, it set up a violent and original universe that helped to launch Schwarzenegger’s career, along with creating firm rules on what the best things in life are. It also spawned a 1984 sequel in Conan the Destroyer, which moved away from the violence of the first film in favor of a more family friendly movie with a different director. It made money, but was a much, much worse film.
It was established in the first film that at some point in the future, Conan would become a king. For years there have been stories of a “Conan the King,” film, and this seems to confirm that – or at least it will encapsulate that.
The franchise tried for a reboot in 2011 with Jason Momoa starring as Conan. That film was a bomb at the box office though. The new film will ignore both it, and Conan the Destroyer.
Morgan also confirmed that at least three actors from Conan the Barbarian will return and reprise their roles. He didn’t say who or whether or not he was including Schwarzenegger as one of the three. He did, however, state that he hopes filming will begin as soon as Schwarzenegger completes his promotional work for Terminator Genisys.
