Preacher casting begins, starting with Tulip
The first major piece of casting for AMC’s upcoming adaptation of the comic Preacher is complete. According to Deadline, the role of Tulip, the female lead, will be played by Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., World War Z).
A full season has not yet been picked up, but AMC has had a lot of success with adult oriented comic properties – names The Walking Dead, one of the most watched shows on TV. The studio has so much confidence in the upcoming Walking Dead spin-off that it has already ordered two full seasons even before the show has an official name.
AMC is also looking at other comic properties as well, including another Robert Kirkman comic, Thief of Thieves.
Preacher is the story of Jesse Custer, a burned out preacher in a small Texas town who becomes the host for a supernatural entity capable of granting control over others. Soon, everyone from his horrific family to a secret society to heaven itself wants Custer dead.
Negga will appear as Custer’s ex-girlfriend and one true love, Tulip. After spending several bitter, and violent years apart, the two are reunited. Tulip is not afraid to steal, stab, or kill to survive.
Tulip and Custer are joined by Cassidy, a foul mouthed Irish vampire with a self-destructive streak. The unlikely trio set out to find God and demand that he explain why he abandoned his creation.
Negga is the first of the three major roles to be cast, and she will likely be the most controversial. As you can see in the image at the top of this post, Tulip in the comics is white with blonde hair. Negga is dark skinned. The Internet will burn.
There is no reason at all that Tulip can’t be black. None. There will be plenty with an opinion on that though, and if you look around for even a few minutes online, $50 bucks says you’ll find a bunch of people that claim this absolutely ruins the story. (Sigh)
With Tulip cast, the others can’t be far behind.
