Sony’s PlayStation VR is coming in October, costs $400

PlayStation VR release date and price

Following on the heels of the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, Sony has announced the PlayStation VR release date and price. Sony’s virtual reality headset will hit stores in October 2016, and cost $399.

That will make is significantly less expensive than its competitors, but it will also have the notable restriction of only working on the PlayStation 4 platform (for now, at least).

Sony won’t come close to beating its rivals to the market – the Oculus Rift will be available on March 28 while the Vive will drop on April 5 – but there are advantages to that. The early adopters will rush to Oculus and HTC, but Sony can wait and see how things plays out.

Sony is also targeting a different market with the PS4, and with more than 35 million consoles sold around the world, that’s a sizeable base ready and waiting. You can make the same argument for the PC market, but not everyone has the hardware to run an Oculus Rift – and the $1500 bundles are a tough sell. The PS4, on the other hand, is ready and waiting for the Sony VR.

There will also certainly be bundles for Sony fans, and they will likely offer the PS4 at a discount. A $700 bundle is still a costly pill to swallow, but it’s better than $1500.

“Ever since we unveiled PS VR during the 2014 Game Developers Conference, we’ve received a tremendous response from gamers and developers alike,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.  “To make sure that we are able to prepare and deliver enough units of PS VR and a wide variety of software titles to consumers worldwide, we have decided to launch PS VR in October 2016.  For those who are looking forward to its launch, we would like to thank everyone for their patience and continued support.  We are beyond excited to deliver to consumers the amazing experience that PS VR offers.”

According to Sony, there are currently more than 230 developers and publishers working on PS VR software titles. Some of those are major developers, many are indie players, but they aren’t all games. The PS VR will also offer a cinematic mode that will allow users to watch all manner of content, from supported movies, to images, and more.

There are even apps where you’ll be able to watch live, streaming VR content. Fox Sports just aired the Big East tournament in VR, allowing users to watch the games from the half court lines in VR. Other events are coming.

As for games, there are currently 160 VR titles in development, including EVE: Valkyrie, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, and Eagle Flight to name a few. Several existing titles like Star Wars Battlefront will also introduce VR specific modes and features.

Sony is likely taking a significant loss on each unit sold – just as it tends to do when it releases a new piece of hardware. As long as the headset sells, Sony will eventually be able to produce the hardware less expensively in the future, making up its money. There’s also the bundles, the software, the cross promotions, etc., etc., It’s a risky move, but a smart one.

We should hear plenty more about Sony’s PlayStation VR, including some games, in the next few weeks.
