PlayStation gives us our first look at the comic-turned-TV show, ‘Powers’
PlayStation has released the first trailer for its upcoming original series, Powers, based on the comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. Powers is the PlayStation Network’s first original program, and it will debut December 2014 exclusively on the PSN.
Be warned, fans of the original comic, the series seems to take several departures from the source material. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but comic fans tend to take the adaptation of beloved properties seriously. And why not. The comic originally debuted in 2000, meaning it has been with the fans for nearly a decade and a half.
The series – both the TV and comic versions – follow police detectives in a homicide unit that are tasked with investigating crimes committed by people with superpowers. The series follows homicide detective Christian Walker (played by Sharlto Copley) and his partner Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward).
Based on the trailer, the TV show seems to focus heavily on the story of the characters themselves, including the revelation that Detective Walker was himself a former superhero before losing his powers. That was a major point in the comics as well, but the primary focus was generally on the cases the detectives were investigating (at least at first).
Still, the changes to the TV show could very much be for the best. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think, then join us in December as we obsessively analyze all the ins and outs of the show.
