Wow, people watched a lot of porn in 2016 – a lot

For the last few years, Pornhub has released a list of its annual stats, along with the top searched for and viewed terms, and a bunch of other info the site collects. And holy shit do people watch a lot of porn. Like, a whole lot.

Pretending you’ve never heard of Pornhub, it is one of – if not the – biggest porn website in the world. In 2016, it recorded over 23 billion visits, with a staggering 91,980,225,000 videos viewed. That’s 3,110 petabytes of data, or 99 GB per second. Another way to look at it is that there are 729 visitors per second. Per. Second.

Pornhub also goes on to list the top 10 countries by capita page views. The U.S. is number one (U.S.A! U.S.A!), with Iceland coming in second. The British take third, Canada fourth, and New Zealand is fifth. The rest of the top 10 per capita are in order, Ireland, Norway, Australia, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

In terms of pure traffic numbers, the U.S. is number one by a huge margin, with nearly three times as much traffic as the second place U.K.

Wow, people watched a lot of porn in 2016 – a lotIn the case of search terms, “lesbian” was the most searched term in the world for the second year in a row. Weirdly, “step mom” was second globally, but it was also the top choice for Americans. It’s an oddly specific request, but to each their own.

The site also goes into detail on the average time on site, and it’s enough to make YouTube jealous, with an average time on site of 9 minutes and 36 seconds. Actually, YouTube averages about 40 minutes on site by visitor, but still, Pornhub’s numbers are incredible.

Pornhub credits the length of time on its site in part to the rise of mobile traffic, which increased +1424 percent since 2010. Globally, the Philippines dominates the time on site, with an average of 12 minutes and 45 seconds per person.

In a sign that should really make everyone take protecting themselves online a little more seriously, the site also breaks down the spent on the site (per average) by individual U.S. states. The South dominated that list, with the top five being Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and South Carolina. Oregon spent the least amount of time on Pornhub, followed by Utah, Kansas, Colorado, and New Hampshire.

It goes on into alarming detail, breaking down the most searched terms by individual country, the times with the heaviest traffic, the traffic by days of the week, and so much more. It even notes how major events like the Olympics, Apple product announcements, the release of hit new shows on Netflix, and so so so much more influence traffic.

It’s almost numbing to see how detailed the stats are, but it’s not really surprising. Porn is huge business and Pornhub is a leader in the field. Knowing the trends can lead to higher profits.

But wow is there a lot of data. A whole lot.
