The ‘Suicide Squad’ cast is official, and it’s insane
The cast for Warner Bros. upcoming Suicide Squad film has been released, and it is impressive to say the least. Among those confirmed are: Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Jai Courtney, Jared Leto, and more.
After weeks of rumors featuring these names and others, the cast is official, according to THR, and filming will begin soon. The exact plot of the film and how all the characters fit in is still unclear, but the team’s lineup has also been revealed.
To begin with, Tom Hardy will play Rick Flag, the group’s leader. Smith will appear as frequent Squad member and Batman villain, Deadshot, while Courtney will play Captain Boomerang. The announcement also confirms earlier reports that Margot Robbie will play Harley Quinn, and relative newcomer, model-turned-actress Cara Delevinge will play Enchantress.
The casting of Leto as the Joker is also official, although it would be completely out of character for him to be part of the team. Jesse Eisenberg is also rumored to appear as Lex Luthor, but his involvement may be minimal and it is still unconfirmed.
The lineup suggests that the filmmakers will combine aspects of the team that was popularized in the 80s, with the New 52 relaunch. That being the case, there is one notable exception missing from the team: the character of Amanda Waller.
The Suicide Squad is a team made up of super villains forced to work for the government, sent on missions where the members are all considered expendable. Waller is frequently seen as the government contact and handler for the team. The character has not been confirmed to be in the movie, but it would be a strange omission.
Details on the contracts involved in this film have not been revealed, but if they are, it will be interesting to see how they are structured. Given that WB and DC are attempting to ape the Marvel formula with 10 new films all set in the same shared universe, the studio will likely want to at least have the option for the actors to appear in multiple properties. The character of Joker will almost certainly appear in future films, and there are other connections that would make sense. Captain Boomerang, for instance, is a Flash enemy. With a standalone Flash film on the way, that would be an obvious pairing.
Coming off an Oscar win, Leto is in heavy demand right now, so tying him to multiple films must have been difficult. Hardy is also a rising star with a hefty asking price, but Smith’s contract is a big question.
A sequel to Independence Day is on the way, and Fox reportedly broke off negotiations with the actor over his asking price. At the time the studio was considering making two movies, and Smith was asking $50 million for both. Assuming he hasn’t significantly lowered his asking price, that puts his salary in the $20-$25 million range – a huge sum for film with a cast like this, especially one that the studio will surely want to appear again.
Of course, given the ensemble cast, Smith may have taken less, or they may have structured his contract around the box office results. We may never know the complete details of the contracts. Regardless, Smith is on board.
The Suicide Squad will be written and directed by David Ayers, with an expected release date of August 5, 2016.
