This week in mining your childhood: DuckTales is returning to TV
Another childhood classic for many of us is about to get a, as Disney is preparing a new DuckTales series, according to Deadline. The new show will launch in January 2017 on Disney XD.
The show will once again follow the adventures of Scrooge McDuck and his trio of rambunctious nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, as they explore the world and do stuff. The show will also bring back many of the original supporting cast including Launchpad McQuack, the Beagle Boys, and more.
If your thinking to yourself how it’s crazy that every show from your childhood is being remade and reintroduced, don’t. Studios like Disney know exactly what they are doing. The now-adults that used to watch DuckTales are proud members of the important mid-30s demographic. The studios hope you will be swept up in nostalgia, and grab your kids for the ride, or maybe just catch the show for yourself.
That’s part of it at least. Another reason for the continual stream of reboots is that the people now making shows like DuckTales, are probably also part of the group that grew up with it.
Maybe that new maturity means we’ll see a different kind of DuckTales. We just saw a hardcore and gritty Power Rangers fan film, so maybe DuckTales will go the same route.
Scrooge could be a rich banker responsible for a financial crash in Duckburg. Huey could be addicted to blow, while Dewey lost a leg in the war. Louie could be the violent hero, willing to do what the others can’t as he cuts a blood soaked trail through exotic locations on a course to avenge Donald Duck, who was recently tortured to death by Magica De Spell.
Granted, that might seem a little dark and cynical, but everybody likes gritty these days, right?
Speaking of, since there is no footage for the cartoon yet, enjoy this slightly disturbing take on the classic DuckTales theme, featuring scientific facts about ducks that will make you cringe.
Happy Wednesday, everybody!
