Mountain Dew Accidentally Encouraged all of Scotland to Jerk Off

A misunderstanding of local slang led to a promotional campaign that inadvertently told Scotland to jerk off by drinking Mountain Dew.

If you’ve been to any English-speaking foreign country, you probably know that just because the language is the same in theory, in practice it can be very different. Just do a quick Google search for the difference between the word “fanny” in the US vs the UK and you’ll get an idea (don’t search it while at work, you’ve been warned).

Most languages have similar origins, but when it comes to slang there are countless variations. This is apparently a lesson that the adverting team from Mountain Dew failed to grasp when it launched a new ad campaign in Scotland.

Like most companies looking to sell a consumer product internationally, Mountain Dew, which is owned by PepsiCo, tend to tailor their advertising campaigns to the locals. But when it came to Scotland, it seems like the marketing team just kinda said to hell with it and didn’t look too deep.

They probably should have taken a quick spin by Urban Dictionary and scrolled down to the Scottish slang definition of “chug.”

In the US, “chug” is innocuous enough; it just means to drink something in large gulps. It’s not surprising to see it attached to a soft drink campaign, so there’s nothing particularly unusual about a tagline “Epic Thrills Start with a Chug.”

In Scotland, however, the word “chug” has a different slang connotation. It means to masturbate. So basically, all the Mountain Dew ads in Scotland are saying “Epic Thrills Start with Masturbation.”

In America, it would sort of be like an ad campaign with the tagline “Epic Thrills Start with a Fap.”

It gets better too.

As spotted by Vice, Mountain Dew, oblivious to the ridicule mounting in Scotland, even added a cute Twitter tagline based on the very American phrase “thug life.” So instead of backing off, they added: “We didn’t choose the chug life, the chug life chose us.”

Teenagers all around the world would probably agree, along with many, many adults.

The tweet also includes a .gif of a young guy all sweaty and needing to replenish some fluids, which didn’t help things. The tweet has been up since August 27, and it isn’t like this hasn’t been pointed out. Dozens of people have let the very active Mountain Dew UK team know (some using very graphic images), but still, the call to jerk off over Mountain Dew remains.

So have fun chugging around the world, whatever that means to you. We ain’t judging.
