So, it turns out that people tend to pirate a lot of stuff online. A whole lot of stuff, especially TV shows and movies.

A pair of new reports highlight the most pirated movies and TV shows of 2015, although the methodology – and therefore the reported numbers – are notably different. They both give a look into what the most torrented properties of the year were though.

The first list is courtesy of Cinemablend, which takes its numbers from the site BT Torrent. That means the number of times a show was torrented are based on a small sample size. In other words, a show torrented 3 million times may have actually been downloaded many, many, many more times. Still, it gives a good sample.

Some of the shows are a surprise, some aren’t. Game of Thrones is frequently the most pirated TV show each year, while The Walking Dead is no surprise either. Suits is a little unexpected, but then again, this is the list according to BT Torrent. There are probably several other shows that could easily be in the top 10, although Suits is still heavily torrented regardless.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the inclusion of Supergirl. The show debuted on October 26, and so far only eight episodes have aired.

This list also seems oddly specific to American shows, which is likely another quirk of using the numbers from BT Torrent alone. Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, and others are probably among the most torrented shows in the world.

The list of movies illegally torrented in 2015 was originally reported by Variety, and they use the results of a piracy tracking firm, Excipio.

Given the source, the numbers are a better worldwide indicator than those on the TV list, and they also are based purely on the number of downloads throughout the entire year – that means there is inevitably more of a slant towards films released earlier in the year, or in the case of Interstellar and others, late 2014.
