10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

The end of the year typically features many of the biggest game releases, and 2017 is no different. Here are our picks for the 10 most anticipated games of the 2017 holiday season.

Every year, gamers look toward the holiday season with a mixture of joy and dread. The last few months of each year – specifically the period leading up to Christmas and the sales numbers that go with it – are packed with major releases on every platform. That’s great for filling the hours with great games, but not so much on bank accounts.

From a new Mario to the return of young IPs to the annual releases of the biggest franchises around, regardless of what gaming platform you own, the 2017 holiday season has a lot of impressive releases.

Here are 10 of our most anticipated games on the way.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

This sequel to the 2014 hit Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor offers a strong Tolkein-flavoured open-world romp, with a little debt owed to Assassin’s Creed. Middle-earth: Shadow of War puts players back in shoes of ex-Ranger Talion, as he sets out on a mission to forge a new ring of power. On the way, he will once again sew a little chaos among the orcs, goblins, and other denizens of Mordor, even as Sauron continues to extend his gaze.

10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

In a sequel to the surprise 2014 RPG hit South Park: Stick of Truth, Matt Stone and Trey Parker reteam with Ubisoft for an all new South Park game. Where the last offering parodied Lord of the Rings and the fantasy genre in general, The Fractured But Whole takes on the comic genre, specifically those properties that dominate Hollywood. And it does it in the way that only South Park can.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins

PC, PS4, Xbox One

10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

After taking a year off to rest the franchise following several years of annual releases, Ubisoft is back with an all new Assassin’s Creed title. Set in the dying days of Ancient Egypt and the rise of the Roman Empire, Assassin’s Creed Origins will finally expand on the founding of the assassins order and the early days of its conflict with the group that would become the Templars. Historical fiction meets open world in a game that Ubisoft hopes will mark a return to form for the franchise.

Super Mario Odyssey

Nintendo Switch

10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

Mario often explores mysterious places, however, the latest game in the franchise will take him where he has never gone before – the real world. Featuring an open world that offers free exploration, Super Mario Odyssey is poised to help sell several Nintendo Switch units this holiday season and offer current owners another major franchise title to jump into.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

If you are looking for a game that lets you destroy Nazis with double automatic shotguns, look no further than the alt-history shooter, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Picking up where the 2014 franchise reboot left off, you’ll find yourself in an alternate 1961 where the Nazis won WWII and went on to dominate the world thanks to retro, atomic age high tech. If you are looking for a stealth action title, this is not the game for you.

Call of Duty: WWII

PC, PS4, Xbox One

10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

Call of Duty returns to its World War II roots. The franchise’s annual release bucks the recent trend of futuristic warfare in favor of a more back-to-basics approach, but fans of the multiplayer need not worry – there is still a heavy emphasis on fast-paced combat in relatively small maps. The cooperative zombie mode is also back with a whole new offering for those that like to mix FPS style with puzzle sovling.

Need for Speed Payback

PC, PS4, Xbox One
November 10, 2017

10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

In the second Need for Speed game since the 2015 reboot, Need for Speed Payback offers and open world environment, and “action driving,” meaning you won’t just be racing others, you’ll be engaging in a little vehicular combat as well. There is a deep storyline at play too, with three playable characters working to take down a cartel that controls a large section of (playable) territory. There will also be a healthy multiplayer component.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Nintendo 3DS/2DS

10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

After the massive hit that was the augmented reality Pokémon Go game, which went on to become the most successful mobile app launch in history, the franchise returns to the confines of traditional video game systems with a new title for Nintendo’s handheld system – or one of its handheld systems if you count the Switch as a handheld. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is actually a re-release of Pokémon Sun and Moon which came out in 2016, but the new version features an alternate storyline and new locations – more than enough to pique the interest of Pokémon devotees.

Star Wars Battlefront II

PC, PS4, Xbox One
November 17, 2017

10 Most Anticipated Games of the 2017 Holiday Season

While DICE and Electronic Arts’ first foray into Star Wars (thanks to their new exclusive license agreement with Lucasfilm) lacked a real story, the second edition attempts to correct that, even as the 40-person multiplayer remains the star. Players will fill the boots of Imperial Commander Iden Versio throughout the campaign, and see some of the events that led up to The Force Awakens. The game should also help ratchet up the excitement for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.
