The second season of Daredevil is sounding incredible, as Marvel casts Elektra
Filming on the second season of Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil is currently underway, and it’s already shaping up to be enough to make fans go a little nuts in anticipation.
Almost nothing of the story has been revealed, but a pair of high profile casting announcements help to give us a picture of what to expect. They both might have a big impact on Marvel’s larger cinematic universe as well.
The most recent casting news involves the character of Elektra Natchios. After a lengthy search, Marvel has cast actress Elodie Yung in the role.
Yung is best known for her turn as Jinx in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, a role that isn’t all that different from Elektra – the main difference is the morality of the two. Where Jinx was a hero, Elektra is at best an anti-hero, and is more often a straight up villain. Although Yung is a few years removed from the role of Jinx, she definitely has more fighting experience than most, which may have helped her land the role.
The character of Elektra is deeply intertwined with that of Matt Murdock/Daredevil. The two met in college and fell in love, but Elektra’s complicated history with her father – a Greek diplomat – led to something much worse.
In something of an Easter egg, during the first season of Daredevil, there was a line about Murdock having dated a Greek girl in college. Most fans jumped all over that, assuming it was Elektra.
Following his murder, Elektra dedicated herself to training as an assassin. She became one of the best in the world, and eventually crossed paths with Daredevil. The two oscillated between fighting and fu-… umm, not fighting (in the naughty way), right up until Elektra was killed by Bullseye.
Or at least she was mostly killed. Kind of. It’s complicated. She is currently alive in the comics, and has frequently had run ins with several Marvel characters.
Marvel Studios haven’t really embraced the TV characters in the way it has embraced its movie characters, but they are still in the same universe. Assuming Elektra survives the season, it would make sense for her to appear in future Marvel movies, or at the very least other Netflix/Marvel shows.
Elektra will be joined in Daredevil’s second season by the Punisher, to be played by Jon Bernthal. The new season is apparently being referred to internally as “Daredevil vs. Punisher,” although that may be overstating things. The Punisher will have a big part though, and he will likely be part of the larger Marvel plans.
It’s still somewhat unconfirmed, but there have been several stories of Bullseye appearing as well; there were even reports that Marvel wanted Jason Statham for the role, something he didn’t necessarily deny, but he did say he wasn’t interested. There will also be appearances from other Marvel/Netflix characters like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, and possibly even Iron Fist – if Marvel can figure things out and cast the lead.
The second season of Daredevil will debut in 2016, but season one showrunner Stephen S. DeKnight confirmed he won’t return. In his place, Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez will take over, both of whom worked on the first season.
