Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor may be joining the Suicide Squad
Last week, DC and Warner Bros. outlined its movie plans for the next six years. One of those reveals was that the follow-up to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be the supervillain-centric Suicide Squad. And if a new report from Deadline turns out to be true, Lex Luthor may join the Suicide Squad.
For those that don’t know, the Suicide Squad is a team consisting primarily of super villains, sent out on behalf of the government to complete missions deemed too risky for anyone but expendable criminals. The property is arguably the least well know of the upcoming DC-based movies, which partly explains why WB is reportedly eyeing A-listers like Will Smith and Tom Hardy for starring roles.
So if the reports of Eisenberg’s involvement are true, it would make sense. Not only would the well known Social Network actor’s involvement help to sell the film to audiences that don’t necessarily follow comics, it would connect the film to the Man of Steel sequel – and with it the entire DC cinema universe.
The Suicide Squad is a team made up of supervillains that are deemed expendable. The roster changes frequently, but the core idea remains the same. The team is sent out on missions were at least some of them are expected to die. It’s not clear who the film will feature, but Harley Quinn has been rumored. Deadshot and Deathstroke are likely candidates as well
Arguably, the most interesting aspect of the news though is the inclusion of Eisenberg’s character, Lex Luthor. The plot of Batman v Superman has been kept a complete secret, but the odds are good that Luthor will appear as a bad guy. His involvement in Suicide Squad could therefore be a result of consequences from his actions in Batman v Superman (since the team is made up of convicts), or it could just show the character’s increasing influence in the DC films.
Again though, this is still all unconfirmed. Even if the report is accurate, Eisenberg is a busy guy these days. His schedule may not allow it. Regardless, odds are there will be plenty of connections between the DC films.
