Join us in obsessing over the Star Wars: Episode VIII title

After plenty of guesses, leaks, and a general sense of anticipation, Lucasfilm has revealed the Episode VIII title. The next movie in the Star Wars juggernaut will be called Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.

The name itself doesn’t really give us much to go on. There will certainly be more to it, but on its face it just seems like an obvious reference to Luke Skywalker, who it was repeatedly suggested in The Force Awakens was, in fact, the last Jedi.

Another obvious reading is that the title refers to Rey, who seems to be following in the steps of the younger Luke in the original trilogy. At the end of Episode VII she met Skywalker, who will – we assume – become her master in the ways of the Force. Of course, if the title does refer to Rey as the last Jedi, that could mean bad things are in store for Luke.

Given the anticipation for this film (and all things Star Wars), it’s a little odd that we are just now getting the title, given that the film was essentially confirmed several years ago as part of the new trilogy. Marvel, by comparison, announced what will be its biggest movie to date – Avenger: Infinity War – in October 2014.

With that said there are two good reasons for the delay. The first is that Disney and Lucasfilm wanted all the attention on Rogue One, which just passed $1 billion internationally. The other reason is that the film is just under 11 months away. There’s plenty of time.

If the studio sticks to the now common guideline, we should expect to see the first trailer in the next few months. Eight months out is something of a new norm, but then again, this is Star Wars. The first Force Awakens trailer came out 13 months ahead of the movie, but that was also the first taste of Star Wars anyone had had in years.

The Star Wars Celebration is scheduled for April 13-16 and we’ll probably get a closer look at the film then, but expect a new trailer before that. Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast hits theaters on March 17, so we may see something around then.

Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi is in theaters on December 15, 2017.
