Javier Bardem in talks to fight Jack Sparrow in ‘Pirates 5’
The fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may have found their villain in Javier Bardem, according to The Wrap. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be helmed by Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, and is set to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
It’s important to note that while the actor is said to be in talks, it is still in the early stages. It is far from a done deal, but both sides seem interested. To date, the Pirates franchise has grossed $3.7 billion worldwide, making it a high priority franchise for Disney.
Bardem would take the part of Captain Brand, a ghost that holds Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow responsible for the death of his brother. Geoffrey Rush is expected to return as Captain Barbosa. Ian Mcshane may also return as Blackbeard, along with possible cameos from Orlando Bloom and Keith Richards.
Bardem is no stranger to the role of villain, of course. His American breakthrough performance came as hitman Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men, which earned him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He again stepped behind into the role of villain again in 2012’s Skyfall, facing off against Daniel Craig’s James Bond.
Filming is set to begin in February.
