If you are ever in a situation where you are choking and there is no one around to give you the Heimlich maneuver, here’s how to save yourself from choking.

When I first founded this site, I was determined to let the community determine its direction. I had a very firm idea of what we should cover, but I also had to allow myself to be wrong and miss things. There may be things that don’t necessarily interest me, but ignoring them is not a good way to build a site.

Not long ago, I posted an article about how to fall asleep in 60 seconds. I posted it partly because I don’t sleep a ton so it was relevant to me, and partly because it was cool. It was biological tech in a way, but it was still outside what I normally cover.

You all loved it, and I got the hint.

We aren’t suddenly going to post nothing but health tips. The only “healthy” vegetarian dish I know involves huge amounts of butter, and I once tried to cook a vegan dish, but gave up and bought a steak.

Lifehacks like these get play though, so here’s how to save yourself from choking.

This episode of how to not die comes courtesy of Fire Medic Jeff Rehman (shout out to a repost from Viralthread). In the video below, he shows a simple and quick way to prevent yourself from choking when you’re alone.

When you have a second person around, the Heimlich maneuver is the way to go, but if you don’t have that option you could be in trouble. In Rehman’s method, while choking you should drop to your knees, then raise your arms above your head. You then flop onto your stomach, which pushes a huge amount of air up the windpipe. That should clear any blockage.

Think about anytime you have done a belly flop in a pool, or just had the wind knocked out of you and you can attest to how much air you shoot out.
