Tom Hardy out of ‘Suicide Squad,’ Jake Gyllenhaal eyed as replacement (UPDATE)

Update: Variety is reporting that Gyllenhaal has officially passed on the role. The search continues.

Due to scheduling issues, Tom Hardy has been forced out of Warner Bros. and DC’s Suicide Squad. According to The Wrap, the top choice to replace him is Jake Gyllenhaal.

Hardy was officially confirmed to appear as Rick Flagg, the field commander of the team. He is currently working on the recently Oscar nominated Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, along with Leonardo DiCaprio. The film is currently over schedule though, and is expected to continue to film until at least mid-March.

As soon as he finishes work on that film, Hardy will then need to begin promotion on Mad Max: Fury Road, which hits theaters on May 15. With Suicide Squad expected to begin filming in April, the schedule just became too much for Hardy.

Shortly after Hardy announced his departure, Gyllenhaal became the front runner thanks to his relationship with Suicide Squad director David Ayers. The pair previously worked together in 2012 on the film End of Watch, in which Gyllenhaal starred and Ayers wrote, directed, and produced.

Scheduling may end up being an issue for Gyllenhaal as well though. The actor is coming off an award drenched performance in Nightcrawler (despite a snub from the Oscars), leaving him in high demand. He is already committed to four films in 2015, although all four have completed – or are nearing completion – of principal photography. Promoting those films may cut into filming.

If Gyllenhaal does join the cast as Flag, he would join Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. His contract contract would likely span multiple films, including potential sequels and other upcoming DC films.

Suicide Squad releases on August 5, 2016.
