Behold, the first trailer for ‘Terminator: Genisys’

First Terminator Genisys trailer

The Terminator franchise is about to undergo something of a reboot with the upcoming Terminator: Genisys – although it’s not a reboot in the traditional sense. To get an idea of how that might happen, check out the first full length trailer below.

Details regarding the fifth film in the Terminator series have been scarce and spotty, but there have been a few hints. We already knew that it would involve a time twist of sorts that would take the story from the original film and alter it. The trailer below gives us a better idea of how that will happen.

Rather than a traditional sequel or reboot, the film seems to be using a tactic reminiscent of the recent Star Trek “reboot,” which served all the purposes of a reboot, but technically created an alternative timeline. It served the same purpose, but avoided the threat of longtime fans chasing JJ Abrams around with torches and pitchforks.

The original 1984 Terminator pitted a man from the future against a nearly unstoppable robot that was out to kill the defenseless mother of the future leader of the resistance (unseen in the original, but played by Jason Clarke in Genisys). The new film keeps that plot, but goes deeper, introducing another level of time travel that wipes away the original. Rather than sending a protector (Jai Courtney in the role Michel Biehn originated) back to defend Sarah Conner (played by Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke), someone, somehow sends a terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) even further back to wait for the original film’s antagonist. Someone from the future then apparently sends yet another model of terminator (played by LeeByung-hun) back to complete the original mission.

Basically, the film is all about wibbly wobbly, timey wimey stuff.

While this has the potential to quickly become convoluted, it seems like a clever idea to refresh the series while also creating a legitimate reason for why Schwarzenegger’s terminator is older. It has already been confirmed that the older model of terminators are wearing organic material that ages. That suggests that his terminator may go even further back in time to wait for the events of the film to happen. Later in the trailer it shows an even older looking Schwarzenegger with gray hair, so there are likely multiple time periods at work.

Directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World, Game of Thrones) hits theaters on July 1, 2015.
