The first Suicide Squad trailer already makes it look like more fun than Batman v Superman
Although the film won’t be out until August, Warner Bros. just dropped the first Suicide Squad trailer. Check it out, then let’s chat, shall we?
If you’ve read DBP for any length of time, then you probably know that I have opinions on the DC universe. Lots of opinions. So many opinions. I grew up a comic kid, oscillating between DC and Marvel (and others, but always those too). I don’t claim to be an expert in either, but I’ve read enough of both to feel a connection to them and I still have a few boxes filled with comics hidden in a storage locker in an undisclosed location.
That said, while it’s hard not to dig what Marvel movies and TV are doing (it may not be perfect, but it is good across the board and two of the Marvel TV shows are on our best shows of 2015 list). DC, however, is going in a different direction and it makes me nervous.
Part of my problem stems from Zack Snyder, who is a technically proficient director that makes soulless films with one-dimensional characters. Sure, that’s just my opinion, but it’s one that I can back up with all kinds of examples.
Man of Steel wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t exactly a “fun” film either. It was dark and gritty, which is sort of the antithesis of the character. I wouldn’t mind that so much if it were just that film, but Snyder is apparently the visionary guiding light of the DC films – he is directing and producing Batman v Superman, Justice League Part One, and Justice League Part Two. He is also serving as producer on several other DC films, including Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman.
My fear is that Snyder’s sterile filmmaking style will be the standard for the DC films. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Suicide Squad – at least not in the trailer. granted, it’s just a trailer. The actual film may still be crap, or it may be an Oscar nominee. Either way it’s a good trailer that creates a different tone from the others.
The clip has a sense of humor that Batman v Superman is sorely lacking. Considering that the Suicide Squad team consists of murderers and psychopaths – and at least one cannibal – for it to look like it’s funnier than Batman v Superman is telling.
Suicide Squad isn’t out until August 5, so we should see a whole lot more, and get a better sense of the film before then.
