First look at Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil
The upcoming Daredevil TV show coming exclusively to Netflix won’t be released until May 2015, but this week at New York Comic-Con, the first look at the series was teased. Along with a look at Charlie Cox in and out of costume (presumably an early version of the costume), a brief bit of footage was shown during the show’s panel. Newsarama was there, and recapped the scene:
A woman slowly opens the door to an apartment (It’s [the character Karen] Page), there’s blood on the floor and the room is dark. She finds something in a vent. Someone sneaks up behind her and attacks her, slamming her into the wall and knocking her to the ground. And in comes Daredevil, in what looks like is likely an early makeshift costume – yeah, it’s all black, straight up ninja looking. Big fight scene commences, and both men go crashing through a window onto the rain-soaked pavement below.
The panel then began with Marvel’s head of TV, Jeph Loeb discussing the casting of Cox.
“One day the phone rings, and Joe Quesada says to me, ‘I found Matt Murdock.’ I didn’t know what he meant,” Loeb told the audience. “‘There’s this actor. He’s gonna be on Daredevil.’ and I said to him, ‘We don’t have that property right now.’ He said, ‘Well we will.’ The person Joe picked out that day is the person that we cast, and that is Charlie Cox.”
Daredevil is the first of five planned Marvel TV shows to air exclusively on Netflix. Daredevil will air first, followed by Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders – which will feature the characters of the four previous shows. Loeb also made clear that the remaining shows have yet to be cast.
Daredevil stars Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Murdock lost his sight as a boy, but also gained heighten abilities to his remaining sense. After years spent training, Murdock went on to gain a law degree in order to defend criminals in the day, and protect the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood at night. Cox is perhaps best known for his role as Irish bootlegger Owen Sleater on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He is joined by Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Paige, Scott Glenn as Murdock’s martial arts mentor, and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, a nurse that helps Murdock (and may be loosely based on the character known as the “Night Nurse.”
Now that filming has begun, expect to hear plenty more about Daredevil – including the first look at the official Daredevil costume – in the months to come.
