The new Doom multiplayer trailer is here, and it looks like glorious mayhem
A month and some change after the release of the first full Doom campaign trailer, Bethesda and id Software are back with a closer look at the game’s multiplayer.
If you are looking for a short description of what to expect, here you go: It looks like a long overdue rebirth of Unreal Tournament. Thanks for playing and be sure to tip your waiter or waitress.
The multiplayer seems to be channeling the spirit of id’s old Unreal multiplayer games, with fast action, plenty of gore, and big weapons that can decimate opponents. It isn’t slow moving tactical, it isn’t stealthy, and it looks like a blast for all those that are sick of patiently waiting for an enemy to come around the corner to score a kill.
There’s arguably an entire generation that knows multiplayer deathmatch modes by either Halo or Call of Duty. Doom, however, assuming it lives up to the potential of the trailer, is something else. It is controlled mayhem, with a helping of slaughter on the side.
On top of that, you also have the ability to become a demon. Great for you, not so much for your opponents. There appears to be a balance though, which means you can stop the demons with a CQB move, That in turn makes you into a post-human thing. Whether that is a specific game mode or part of the action is something we’ll have to wait and see.
Check out the trailer below, and look for Doom for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 13.
