DC shows animated Aquaman looking cool in ‘ Justice League: Throne of Atlantis’
While there is no question that Marvel is kicking dirt in the face of its rival DC when it comes to live action movies, DC and Warner Bros. animated division is more than holding its own. Since it began producing feature length animated films back in 1993, WB has released 29 original DC-based films, and three more are scheduled for 2015.
The first of these upcoming films is the Aquaman-centric, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, based on the new 52 Aquaman “Throne of Atlantis” story arc by Geoff Johns. The film will be released on home media on January 27, 2015, and is positioned as a sequel to this year’s Justice League: War.
Joining Justice League: Throne of Atlantis in 2015 are the Batman-centric animated feature Batman vs. Robin, then later in the year, Justice League: Gods and Monsters.
The animated films are a separate entity from the upcoming DC live action movies and exist within their own continuity. Rumors – heavy emphasis on the “rumors” part at this point – suggest that Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Conan) will appear as a live action Aquaman in the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. That could in turn serve as an introduction for the character to have a larger role in the Justice League film.
For the moment though, if you want to see Aquaman outside of the comics, check out the first look at the upcoming animated film (starting at 1:00), and look for Justice League: Throne of Atlantis to release early next year.
