DBP Podcast: Taking Tekken 7 global with the series’ Brand Manager
During our time at E3 2016, we had the chance to speak with Mark Religioso, Brand Manager for Bandai Namco and one of the guys responsible for spreading the word about the upcoming Tekken 7.
If you count yourself a gamer, you know the Tekken series, at least to a degree. It has been around for more than 22 years, released 10 major titles, crossed over with Street Fighter, and produced several movies and anime. It’s a worldwide hit, and the upcoming Tekken 7 will push it back into the public spotlight. With a little help.
We spoke with Religioso about the plans for the game, and how you make an already well-known brand even bigger. The short answer is that you don’t rely on the name. Instead, you do things like bring back arcade tournaments and travel around the world recruiting the best players around. You also plan eSports competitions. And that’s just the start.
It was an interesting conversation and a fascinating look behind the curtain of what goes into promoting a game. It’s more than just throwing some ads on TV or opening the developers up to the press. That may have worked in the past, but it takes more than that now. You need to get people excited and build from there.
Check it out and look for Tekken 7 in the arcade later this year, then on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in early 2017.
