Ubisoft takes a mulligan as an Assassin’s Creed TV show is on the way
You have to hand it to Ubisoft, it doesn’t easily accept defeat. Despite the recent Assassin’s Creed film generally being considered a failure, the publisher is planning on continuing to adapt the franchise, this time as an Assassin’s Creed TV show. There may be more films on the way too.
The news of the TV show came via a Reddit AMA with Assassin’s Creed head of content, Aymar Azaizia. He didn’t have any details to give beyond the announcement itself, but last year Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that the company was in talks with Netflix to bring a show to the streaming platform. That doesn’t confirm that the show in question will be an Assassin’s Creed TV show, but other that the Rabbids games Ubisoft hasn’t mentioned any other possible small screen adaptations.
Like the movie, the TV show will presumably be developed by Ubisoft’s fledgling in-house production company. That would put it under the control of the same group that was in charge of the movie. That doesn’t necessarily mean the show and the film will be related, at least not directly. Given the scope of the games, it will likely feature new characters and a new time period – possibly multiple time periods. No release window for the show was mentioned, but it could be a while.
“We will take our time to get sure we deliver something we can be proud of,” Azaizia wrote.
As for the films, even though they were critically mauled they did make money internationally – not a lot, especially when you factor in the marketing (it made $240 million on a $125 million budget), but enough that Ubisoft isn’t willing to give up on what is a potentially lucrative and defining property for its new TV and film division.
It’s not clear yet if a movie follow-up would be a direct sequel with the same cast or just another film set in the same universe. Shortly before the release of the first film, one of its financiers stated there were plans for at least two sequels. Those plans may have changed slightly, but Ubisoft isn’t ready to give up yet.
There’s no timetable for when we might hear more about the Assassin’s Creed TV show or film, but there are plenty of rumors of a new game on the way. The current theory is that the next game will be titled Assassin’s Creed: Empire and be released at the end of the year. If the rumors are true, the game will be set during the days of Ancient Egypt, which would likely make it an origin story of sorts for the assassins.
Whether that is true or not, if there is a new Assassin’s Creed game later this year – and the smart money says there will be – an announcement should come soon.
