Animated Guardians of the Galaxy heading to the small screen
Following the massive success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Disney today announced that the intergalactic team will return next year to the small screen in animated form, according to the NY Times. The Guardians of the Galaxy animated show will debut on Disney XD in 2015, and will be considered part of Marvel Animation’s Phase Two, meaning it likely wouldn’t be directly connected to the film.
The animated show will follow the adventures of the same characters featured in the film: Peter “Star Lord” Quill, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket, and Groot. No word yet on whether or not the actors that originated the roles in the film will return to voice their animated counterparts.
It’s no surprise that both Disney and Marvel hope to expand the footprint of the Guardians given the success of the film. Since its opening on August 1, the movie has gone on to earn $323.8 million in North America alone, and the international box office is over $330 million – and that does not include China, where the film just opened under the… original title Interplanetary Unusual Attacking Team. No, seriously.
Guardians of the Galaxy will be available to download on November 18, with a physical home media release scheduled for December 9.
