Matt Smith may be in line to star in the Harry Potter spin-off
At the moment this is just a rumor, but it’s one with some meat to it. According to a report from The Sun that comes courtesy of Radio Times, Matt Smith (Doctor Who, Terminator: Genisys) is a frontrunner for the lead in the Harry Potter spin-off trilogy, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Now, admittedly, there are a couple of troubling words and phrases in that lead off paragraph. To begin with, the story is completely unconfirmed. Smith has publicly stated that he would be interested in the property, but that doesn’t mean anything. I would love to write a movie for Marvel. I’d also love to be king of Tahiti. Neither are likely to happen.
I would also like to be a character in a video game, find a lost city filled with treasure, and grow a foot taller. You get the point.
Of course Smith would love to be involved – it’s a brand new trilogy spun off from a multi-billion dollar franchise. Smith is also seemingly one of maybe five or six well known British actors that has not been in a Harry Potter (or X-Men) film, so he’s due.
The other, slightly more disturbing phrase up there is “The Sun.”
For those that don’t know, The Sun is a British tabloid with a reputation for being disdainful of pesky little things like facts. When not busy being sued for hacking phones, lying to judges to create the news, and committing criminal misconduct, it tends to print first and fact check later. Or never, as the case may be.
Still, you can’t deny the appeal of the 11th Doctor having attended Hogwarts, and they do occasionally, almost accidentally get things right.
We should know for sure soon enough. Filming is expected to begin later this summer in London, with the first film set for release on November 18, 2016, with David Yates set to return to the franchise to direct. Benedict Cumberbatch was reportedly approached for the lead, but backed out to pursue other projects.
Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them is scheduled to be at least a trilogy, with the second and third parts already scheduled for release on November 16, 2018 and November 20, 2020. The studio will need to lock down a lead actor very soon, and sign them for a multi-picture deal that will require a six year commitment.
As for the story, it’s based on a screenplay from J.K. Rowling. It is set in New York during the 1920s, and stars the character of Newt Scamander, a famed magiczoologist from the Potter-verse whose exploits were mentioned by way of text books he helped to write.
Smith is currently set to appear in the upcoming Terminator: Genisys, followed by Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. He is currently finishing filming for the fantasy horror film Patient Zero, so his schedule should clear up shortly.
Smith would be the second Doctor to appear in a Harry Potter-related film. His predecessor appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Again though, this is all a rumor, but it’s an interesting one.
